Direktur Utama PT Telkom Indonesia Arief Yahya menyambut baik proses merger XL dan Axis ini. Menurut Arief, proses merger antara operator di dalam negeri memang sebuah keniscayaan.

"Merger itu adalah suatu keniscayaan, pasti dilakukan. Di seluruh dunia, operator keempat itu tidak ada yang pernah besar. Jadi nature operator itu hanya ada tiga,” kata Arief usai meraih penghargaan Marketeer of the Year 2013 di Jakarta melalui keterangan tertulis, Jumat (13/12/2013).

Menurut Arief, dibandingkan negara lain, jumlah operator di Indonesia jauh lebih banyak. Saat ini jumlah operator di Indonesia ada lebih dari 10 operator. Dengan jumlah operator telekomunikasi selular lebih dari 10 perusahaan, kualitas layanan akan semakin turun.

Sebagai perbandingan, China dengan penduduk lebih dari 1 milyar dan India dengan penduduk sekitar 700 juta orang, hanya memiliki tidak lebih dari empat operator. Amerika Serikat juga hanya memiliki tiga operator, demikian pula dengan Australia juga tiga operator.

Arief menambahkan, proses merger XL dan Axis akan terjadi di Indonesia cepat atau lambat. "Konsolidasi baik untuk industri. Selanjutnya bisa kami tebak, hal ini akan sama dilakukan oleh operator lain," tandas Arief.

Di kesempatan yang sama, Ketua Umum Asosiasi Telekomunikasi Seluruh Indonesia (ATSI) Alex J. Sinaga menilai apa yang dilakukan XL dan Axis adalah sesuatu yang alami.

"Itu hal yang biasa, karena dari pemerintah kan tidak ada trigger ke sana (konsolidasi). Padahal kalau kita mau 12 operator menuju jumlah ideal itu, semua harus men-trigger," kata Alex.

Jika melihat kondisi demografi, geografi, dan layanan baru yang tersedia, menurut Alex industri selular nasional untuk tumbuh masih besar.

"Idealnya operator di Indonesia jumlahnya lima. Kalau masalah untuk bersaing, ruangnya masih besar. Tahun depan kita optimistis industri selular nasional tumbuh 7-8 persen. Tahun ini tumbuhnya 8 persen," tandasnya. (dew)
